Volborth was the son of the respected merchant Johann Christian [1] Volborth in Nordhausen. [2] He studied Protestant theology at the University of Jena . After graduating, he initially worked as a tutor in the Baltic States . In 1797 he was ordained and went as a pastor to Mogilev (now Mahiljou in Belarus ), where he worked until 1805. He then served for five years in New Saratovka near St. Petersburg.
In 1811 the Imperial University of Dorpat made him an honorary Dr. theol. PhD. At that time he was court preacher to the governor, Prince Georg of Oldenburg in Tver . From 1813 he worked as a pastor of the Saint Peter Church (Saint Petersburg) , the largest Lutheran church in Russia. He gave up this post on September 24, 1839. [3]
With the entry into force of the new constitution of the Lutheran Church in the Russian Empire, which Volborth had worked out since 1828, in 1832 he became the spiritual vice-president of the Evangelical Lutheran General Consistory in St. Petersburg. He remained in this position until his death in 1840. He was the leading pastor of the Lutheran Church in the Russian Empire . His successor was Friedrich Nikolaus von Pauffler .
His son Alexander von Volborth (1800-1876) was born in Mogilev , who became known as a paleontologist and namesake of the mineral volborthite .
